Council Honors Sneed, Masselli, Newton and DECA

Monday the Common Council opened its meeting with a series of honors for individuals and a group who have contributed to the community with their work.

Former acting Deputy Chief Greg Sneed, who is now a Deputy Chief of security services at Eastern Connecticut State University was cited for his twenty-six years of service as a police officer in Middletown.

In presenting the honor, Council members praised Sneed's integrity.

"You impressed everyone you served under," Mayor Sebastian Giuliano said.

Sneed was in line to be appointed permanent Deputy Chief of the Middletown deparment before his departure, but his appointment was mired in the controversy over whether Acting Chief Patrick McMahon should be appointed as permanent chief.

The Council also honored Mark Masselli for his 20 years service on Middletown's Housing Authority.

Masselli took the opportunity to address the Woodrow Wilson Middle School Students who were shadowing the mayor and the Common Council.

"This is a special community because of all the people dedicated to voluntary public service," Masselli told the young people.

The Council also honored Zachary Newton, a young resident who will be awarded the rank of Eagle Scout and the Middletown High School DECA team which brought home a state-record 34 awards at a recent national DECA conference.
