Weekend Choices

It's one of those weekends where you truly have myriad choices of arts events (some of which you may have already seen posted.) Allow me to remind and/or inform of some of your choices.

Oddfellows Playhouse Teen Repertory Company presents "RUR" tonight through Saturday at 7:30 p.m. The play, written in 1920 by Czech playwright Karel Capek, was one of the first plays to deal with artificial intelligence to be used as servants to the ruling society. Of course, the "robots" (a word coined by the playwright's brother) try and take over.  Performances take place at the Playhouse, 128 Washington Street. For ticket information, call 860-347-6143. There are also performances next Friday and Saturday (11/19 and 20.)
On Friday, The Buttonwood Tree presents singer-songwriter Kenn Morr & Band at 8 p.m. The Litchfield County-based performer blends acoustic folk with Americana and does so in a fine fashion. Saturday, the fine jazz pianist John Funkhouser, on the faculty of the Berklee School of Music in Boston, brings his Trio to the intimate performance space. In its own words, the Trio "blends elements of modern jazz, funk, blues, 20th century classical, Indian classical, and European and American folk music" into a fascinating aural stew.  They'll begin at 8 p.m.

Saturday, The Greater Middletown Concert Association presents "The Magic Flute", the lovely opera composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.  The beautiful melodies more than make up for the lack of cohesion in the story line - it is loads of fun.  Performed by the Connecticut Lyric Opera and CT Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra, Adran Sylveen, music director, the curtain rises at 7:30 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center at MHS, 200 LaRosa Lane.  For ticket information, call 860-347-4887 or go to www.greatermiddletownconcerts.org.

And a reminder that Vintage Players, the Middletown-based theater troupe, presents “Fall Follies” on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m in the main auditorium of Congregation Adath Israel Synagogue, 8 Broad Street. The Players will perform staged readings of hilarious works by James Thurber and David Ives as well as a jazzy take on a speech from Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” and more. Donations will be gratefully accepted at the door. Cast members include Carolyn Kirsch, Terri Klein, John Hall, Richard Kamins, Naomi Kamins, Charlie Rich, Gerry Matthews, Peter Sipples, Pat Murray, Lynne Fiducia, Cora Rodenhizer and Jane McMillan.
Refreshments will be served.
For reservations and more information, please call Richard Kamins at 860-632-1067 or Jane McMillan at 860 346 1377.

Our thoughts go out to the family of Phyllis Bruce, wife of and musical collaborator with composer and Wesleyan Professor Neely Bruce, who passed earlier this week.  Together, they made such beautiful music - she will be missed.
