School Superintendent to Make Decision on Egg Drop

Gary Oulette, Chief of the Middletown Fire Department, said that the Superintendent of Public Schools would decide on Friday afternoon whether the Keigwin School field would be dry enough to continue with the planned drop of 10,000 plastic eggs from a helicopter Saturday.

Oulette said that neither he nor Acting Chief of Police Patrick McMahon had been contacted by the group which is sponsoring the event, The Catalyst Church. Oulette told me that as far as he knew, the Superintendent's office gave approval to the helicopter plastic egg drop on Keigwin fields without contacting Police or Fire departments. School District Facilities Manager Ken Jackson, who serves on the Schools Safety Committee, is responsible for giving permission to groups which want to use school fields.

According to Oulette, Jackson will examine the drainage of the fields on Friday, before deciding whether the event can proceed. Oulette said that once he knows if the event will be held, he and the police chief will become involved in ensuring that it proceeds as safely as possible.

Property owners need approval from the town to put up swing sets on their property, pools, etc. but yet something that may cause injuries on public property doesn't need approval from the town? Please explain....??? Fees are charged to use the parks through approval of the town but this doesn't? The superintendent and maintenance workers of the schools get to make this decision...what other authority and decision making are they going to get?

Hey, the Superintendent just got his office redone for $80,000 (what part of the school budget did that come from?) so now he can do what ever he wants. The Board of Education has put no restrictions on his spending or decision making.
